One Day Sight Seeing Tour

Tour Itinerary for SEAA Delegates - Day 1 - 24th August 2025:  “The Castle & Whisky Tour”

By Nicola Fraser, www.highlandjourneys.co.uk

We depart from Aberdeen for 9.00am all set for an exciting castle and whisky tour in rural Aberdeenshire!

We will drive along the scenic coast to arrive in the picturesque seaside town called Stonehaven.  A few miles further along the coast, we will arrive at one of our most striking castles in Scotland, Dunnottar Castle.  Perched high on top of a flat-topped rock with sheer cliffs on three sides, the ruins of this ancient castle will not disappoint! We will spend about an hour and half here exploring the castle and its rich history. (Note: there are 180 steps down to the castle/shore, make sure you have sturdy footwear!

Then we leave the rugged coastline and head inland driving through the rich farming land until we arrive at the historic Maryculter House Hotel on the banks of the famous River Dee. This really is a special place…it has been welcoming guests since the 1200’s! This is where the Knights Templar college was founded, at the time of the Great Crusades. We will be having a delicious lunch here using mostly local ingredients. Plenty of time to take photos of this unique place and maybe a group photo on the riverbanks as well!

After lunch we will leave the River Dee area and drive North, through the lovely farming landscape to arrive at Glen Garioch Distillery. The distillery is situated in the heart of Old Meldrum, a quaint, historic market town. Glen Garioch (pronounced Geery) is one of Scotland’s oldest operating distilleries and is the most easterly! They have been making whisky here in the distillery since1797! Shielded from the world’s prying eyes, deep in the fertile “Granary of Aberdeenshire”, and only ever produced in small, precious batches, Glen Garioch whisky is a rare find indeed! We will have a full tour of the distillery and tasting of a few drams too!

Later we return to the granite city of Aberdeen in time for dinner, feeling relaxed and happy after a fine day out!

Day 2 Tour Itinerary for SEAA Delegates 25th August 2025: “Royal Deeside Tour”

Depart Aberdeen for 9.00am and we start our highland journey in the beautiful, lush Dee Valley. We will drive inland, following the majestic River Dee, until we arrive at the ancient Crathes Castle & Gardens. Here we can walk around and take photos of this impressive 16th Century gem!

We continue our scenic drive through the valley and into the Cairngorms National Park. This is the UK’s largest National Park and is quite spectacular. The scenery, the mountains, the high plateaus, the arctic conditions (even in Summer!) and of course the iconic wildlife.

We can stop in Ballater for our picnic lunch on the lawn in the Square. Ballater is where the Royals “do their shopping”! We will have time to explore the village by foot, check out the historic Railway Station once used by Queen Victoria, and browse the many interesting local craft shops.

Later, we continue our drive to the Balmoral Castle Estates. In the months of August and September, the Royal Family are in residence and so it is closed to the public. However, we can stop at the Estate car park, and take photos of the lovely area, the River Dee, the famous Crathie church and Balmoral Gatehouse.

After some time spent here and learning all about Queen Victoria and her “beloved Highlands”, we will continue our journey west to the alpine-like village of Braemar. The rich and famous have been visiting this highland village for over a thousand years, because of its location, beauty, clean air, mountains and wildlife. We will spend some time here, where we have options of visiting the Braemar Highland Games Arena, and the famous Fife Arms (a Scottish hotel in the Cairngorms named as one of the “best in the world” by Conde Nast Travel Magazine for 2025).

Next, we can drive further west to a remote area of the Cairngorms National Park, called the “Linn of Dee”. This was a favourite picnic spot of Queen Victoria! We can visit the gorge and watch the River Dee squeeze through the gap in the rocks! It is a beautiful area of the Highlands.

After a wonderful day out in Royal Deeside, learning about castles, nature, geography and history, we can return to Aberdeen, again feeling refreshed and happy in time for dinner!

24th and 25th August. Please note: no accommodation is provided and you will return to Aberdeen each evening to stay in your own accommodation
