This free Workshop on Ultrasonic Doppler (WUD) edition is organised by our sponsor UBERTONE in collaboration with members of the LOC. It will take place the day before the conference on Monday the 24th June in the School of Engineering’s Fluid Mechanics Laboratory on the University of Aberdeen campus.

The goal of this workshop is to give the opportunity to Master Students, PhD candidates and curious researchers to discover, use and discuss with peers about Ultrasonic Doppler Methods for Environmental Hydraulics experiments.

Programme

Please note this is a provisional programme and may be subject to change

08:00 - 09:00    Registration (in Crombie Halls)

09:00 - 10:00    Brief welcome - introduction to workshop, group splitting              (1 hr)

10:00 - 11:00    Groups split between experimental exercise stations and data analysis          (1 hr)

11:00 - 11:30    coffee break     (0.5 hrs)

11:30 - 12:30    Groups split between experimental exercise stations and data analysis          (1 hr)

12:30 - 13:30    Lunch break     (1 hr)

13:30 - 14:30    Groups split between experimental exercise stations and data analysis          (1 hr)

14:30 - 15:00    coffee break     (0.5 hrs)

15:00 - 16:00    Groups split between experimental exercise stations and data analysis          (1 hr)

16:00 - 17:00    End of workshop - discussion/questions           (1 hr)

The content of the workshop will be centered on experimental practice, including exercises of installation, data recording and data processing of UVP (Ultrasonic Velocity Profiler) and/or ADVP (Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler) in two laboratory open channel flumes. Part of the workshop will also be dedicated to peer-to-peer discussions, to discuss measurement needs, methods and applicability of the methods.

Theoretical and lecture-like information will be sent in advance, for the participants to read and study beforehand. The course will be led the whole day by UBERTONE professionals and researchers/technicians from the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory.

Topics covered during the exercises:

  • Ultrasonic Doppler measurement technique
  • Acoustic velocity profiler
  • Monostatic and bistatic measurement technique
  • Open channel flumes
  • Acoustic scatterers for quality data
  • Through-wall measurements
  • Turbulence measurement
  • Bed roughness influence

This event is free of charge for registered symposium participants. Lunch and all other refreshments on the day will be offered by UBERTONE. Participants are invited to have lunch together on the day, which also serves as an informal discussion opportunity. Any accommodation costs involved with arriving a day early will need to be covered by the participants themselves.
